Early Childhood
Early Childhood (Ages 3–8)
Building Strong Foundations for Confidence, Independence & Lifelong Skills
The early childhood years are an extraordinary time of growth. Between the ages of 3 and 8, children develop many of the essential skills they will rely on throughout their lives—motor coordination, emotional regulation, communication, social play, and the ability to participate meaningfully in daily routines at home, school and in the community.
At Kids Therapy Station, we specialise in supporting this important developmental stage. Our occupational therapy services are designed to help young children strengthen their skills, build confidence, and feel understood, supported and capable. Most importantly, we are a fully mobile service, meaning we work with children in the places where they feel most safe and comfortable—their home, kindy, preschool or school. This approach allows learning to happen naturally, within familiar environments, and with the people who matter most.
Why Occupational Therapy Matters in Early Childhood
Early intervention can make a significant difference in a child’s developmental trajectory. By supporting children early, we help build the foundations for independence, participation and wellbeing later in life.
Occupational therapy helps young children to:
- Understand and manage their sensory experiences
- Develop confidence in their motor and coordination skills
- Build emotional resilience and self-regulation
- Learn to communicate, connect and play with others
- Participate in routines and activities at home and school
- Develop the building blocks needed for learning and social success
Each child is unique, and our role is to meet them where they are, understand their individual strengths and challenges, and guide them toward achievable growth.
Our Early Childhood Focus (Ages 3–8)
Our therapists work closely with children, families and educators to support development across key skill areas:
Early Motor Development & Coordination
We help children develop:
- Gross motor skills (running, jumping, ball skills, balancing)
- Fine motor skills (drawing, cutting, using tools)
- Bilateral coordination (using both hands together)
- Core strength and body awareness
These skills underpin school readiness, play, self-care and confidence.
Sensory Processing & Emotional Regulation
Many young children need support to understand and respond to sensory experiences. We assist with:
- Managing big emotions
- Calming strategies and self-regulation
- Understanding sensory preferences and sensitivities
- Helping children feel safe and comfortable in their environment
This helps reduce overwhelm and supports better participation at home, kindy and school.
Communication & Social Play
Play is a child’s primary occupation. We support development in:
- Cooperative and imaginative play
- Sharing, turn-taking and social rules
- Understanding others’ emotions and cues
- Communicating needs effectively
Improved social play builds confidence, friendships and engagement.
School Readiness & Classroom Participation
For children transitioning into school or early years of schooling, we help with:
- Following routines and instructions
- Sitting still and attention in class
- Pencil grip, writing readiness and pre-academic skills
- Organisation and independence
These foundations help children thrive in learning environments.
Daily Living Skills
Independence grows from practise and confidence. We support skills such as:
- Dressing, zips and buttons
- Feeding and mealtime routines
- Toileting
- Morning and bedtime routines
- Using tools and equipment safely
Support for Neurodivergent Children
Our therapists have experience supporting children with:
- Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
- Global Developmental Delay (GDD)
- Intellectual disability
- Sensory processing needs
We use strengths-based, child-led and neuroaffirming approaches to ensure children feel understood, valued and supported.
Together, we can help your child thrive—today, and into the future.
